About the event
Maggie says:
So excited to be able to share the first Community Research Update event for my dissertation work! The intention behind this event is to share my progress so far in conducting my study, which intimately involves members of the Cuban community here in South Florida. Please mark your calendars for June 4, 2023 from 5-7pm at Dear Eleanor!
Purpose: The community research project I have been working on for my dissertation does not happen in a vacuum. Rather, it is the product of so much community support I have had both before and during my academic career. It is not customary within academia to stay in close connection with participants once their inclusion in studies has concluded. However, in an effort to change the exploitative nature of science, I want to be as transparent and forthcoming about my research. This is just one effort in doing so!
Who is this event for?: This event is intended for all people that have supported the project, whether through their direct involvement as participants or as my cheerleaders. Therefore, all are welcome! If you previously participated in my research, are interested in participating, or enjoy the work you've seen me do so far, please come!
What will we be doing?: I will be giving a short presentation updating folks on how the research project is going. We will then transition to a hands-on event where we will create art based on our understanding and connection to our ancestors. Please feel free to bring pictures of whoever you interpret to be your ancestors. This could be your blood family, chosen family, ancestral homeland, etc. Basically, what you feel connected to most in thinking about your lineage.
Filming the event: This event will be filmed and used to produce a short video as a recap. Please see me at the event if you'd like to not be filmed!
